La Clínica's community health education methods are based on Paulo Freire's concept of empowerment: having people actively participate in and take responsibility for their own education while promoting the idea that the community is capable of creating positive social change. Based on this philosophy, our community health educators work actively with a network of adult and youth community volunteers who serve as community health "promotores" (promoters) in their neighborhoods and schools.

With our Adult Health Education program, we provide the opportunity for members of the community to come together and discuss underlying causes of health problems in their lives and search for ways to resolve these issues, to improve their environments, ensure equity in resources, and improve the quality of life for their community. Participants volunteer to train as promotores and take the information we provide on issues that affect them to other members in their communities. This includes helping their neighbors with chronic illnesses, exercise, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle habits.
