La Clínica's community health education methods are based on Paulo Freire's concept of empowerment: having people actively participate in and take responsibility for their own education while promoting the idea that the community is capable of creating positive social change. Based on this philosophy, our community health educators work actively with a network of adult and youth community volunteers who serve as community health "promotores" (promoters) in their neighborhoods and schools.

With our Youth Community Health Education program, La Clínica incorporates music, videos and elements from pop culture to educate teens about health and social issues. Using Freire's teaching techniques, the health educator actively involves students in each lesson through hands-on experiential learning activities, with the goal that the teens will share and promote what they learn with their peers. Participants also receive tutoring once a week and are very active in the community, participating in local events and health fairs.
