ABOUT THE POSITION: Under general supervision, the individual in this position will assist with preparation, implementation, and evaluation of health education classes provided to adolescents regarding reproductive health, decision-making, communication skills, and assists in the training and facilitation of a school based peer education program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Requires high school diploma or equivalent plus, 2-3 years experience working in a community health setting providing health education to low-income minorities in a multi-cultural urban setting is required.
  2. Two years of work experience with youth groups, preferably in a classroom setting.
  3. Excellent community outreach techniques, including ability to work with school administrators on program implementation.
  4. Knowledge of principles, methods, and materials used in health education.
  5. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills essential.
  6. Strong group facilitation, presentation and organizational skills.
  7. Team player, self-motivated, able to work independently as well as collectively on projects.
  8. Reliable transportation needed to provide classes at various sites.
  9. Must have flexible schedule to conduct classes and attend community events after regular business hours and on weekends, when necessary.
  10. Bilingual English/Spanish required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assists in conducting health education programs; carries on specific projects as assigned.
  2. Provides family life education, including family planning, teen pregnancy, and other issues affecting adolescents at schools, Oakland Housing Authority sites, and community organizations; attends meetings, advises community groups on health activities, obtains speakers, and otherwise promotes support of public health objectives.
  3. Attends meetings as required.
  4. Maintains documentation of individual contacts.
  5. Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the program, by assisting with data collection, entry, analysis and reporting.
  6. Assist in the recruitment, training and facilitation of two school based peer education programs.
  7. Assist in the development and production of health education materials such as workshops, pamphlets, curricula and other materials as necessary.
  8. Reviews published materials from other agencies for readability and suitability for program use.
  9. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
