The Centro de Promotores, or Health Promoter Training Center, originated from the work at Casa CHE. Many members of the community who are enthusiastic to improve the health of their community feel unprepared to work with the community. Casa CHE developed a 10-session curriculum, called the Escuela para Promotores (School for Health Promoters), to provide participants with the philosophy of community action, an understanding of group dynamics, and the skills necessary for leadership. The Escuela serves as a starting point to build a team of volunteer community members, who are interested in addressing health issues that affect their families and their neighbors. Once trained, the Promotores attend weekly meetings where they receive ongoing training and social support to participate in many of our education programs. Currently, Promoteres are facilitating diabetes walking groups, social support groups, stress and relaxation classes, parenting classes focused on feeding management and diabetes prevention. To date, the Escuela has graduated hundreds of Promotores, many of whom continue to volunteer at La Clínica or have moved on to utilize their leadership skills in the community.
